LTD’s awesome babysitter gave him a pretty cool book for the holidays. Alice Schertle’s 2008 hardcover Little Blue Truck illustrated by Jill McElmurry has everything a toddler needs trucks and barnyard animals. The story, which has a certain sweetness about it, centers around Blue the pick up truck who motors around the farm honking, Beep! Beep! Beep! When the animals hear their friend Blue, they all chime in with the usual barnyard sounds of quack, oink and moo. Blue’s daily route is interrupted one day by a loud jerk of a dump truck who has no interested in talking to the animals. However, the big truck gets his comeuppance when he gets stuck in the mud. Of course no one will help him except Blue. Yet, Blue really should have called AAA because he got stuck in the mud as well trying to help. I know what you are thinking; the lesson of the book is that no good deed goes unpunished. Well, you would be wrong, because all the animals run to help Blue and indirectly the big dump truck. Little Blue Truck is not only charming but interactive, so don’t read it to the kids if you don’t want to hear a lot of baas, clucks and peeps.
