Having grown up in Maine and with LTD’s Nana still there we visit quite a bit. Every time we go, The Mommy works on her Yankee down-east accent with varying degrees of success. In Maine, they say, ‘you can’t get there from here,’ but with Kevin Hawkes 2007 story, The Wicked Big Toddlah you can try. Ayuh, this wicked funny book revolves around Toddie. Toddie is really, really big, think King Kong sized. He is so large that the entire town helps take care of him.
Toddie does all the things babies do except he does them in Maine and on a huge scale. For instance, he takes baths in the lake and uses real boats for toys. Toddie does wicked fun things like go blueberry picking, plays with a moose and taps a tree for maple syrup. The book not only teaches simple Down East phrases, but also informs the reader that it really does take a village to raise a child. The Wicked Big Toddlah is in fact wicked good.
